We’re happy to announce another drumming retreat with morning yoga sessions in a wonderful OMbora in Świdwowiec village in Poland (on the way between Berlin and Poznan) on the weekend of 11th-13th of October 2024. It’s dedicated to anyone who feels like learning – even those with no experience in learning percussion! Morning yoga will activate us for the whole day, and soundbathing will relax us in the evenings.

We’ll focus on the modern upper-style technique for frame drum according to the approach of Zohar Fresco (you can read more about the technique here, and in my recent IG post), learn new grooves, work on our rhythmic skills, and take time to play together to indulge in a rhythmic flow.

Upper-style – to put it shortly – is a position where the frame drum is held and played in both hands. It allows the player to move – walk, dance – during playing. For me there’s no better deal in musical practice: integrating movement and sound. Or should I say: realizing they are actually a one thing.

Having learned some basics of this playing style, we will move towards rhythmics and group playing, with different challanges for each level: from keeping the rhythm and playing proposed variations, to improvising new phrases. I will provide you with tools to develop your sense of rhythm and musicality, so that you could later take it any direction that is interesting for you.

The program includes:

  • 9h of drum classes (Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday)
  • 2h of morning ashtanga joga (for all levels)
  • jamming around as much as we want!
  • evening bonfires
  • vegan & vegetarian food
  • evening relaxation sessions with bowls and gongs

Investment (classes and full accomodation): €180-220 – sliding scale (€200 is a recommended standard price / €180 is for people with lower budget / payments above €200 will help compensate participation of those with a lower budget)

The frame drum classes with Borys are always a lot of fun. He knows how to keep the lessons diversified, he is patient, motivating and inspiring. Highly recommended!

Borys is a very skilled teacher, who can move seamlessly in one lesson between a purely technical approach to rhythm analysis and playing the instrument on one side, and a more intuitive playful approach on the other, so he always manage to find the leverage point for the learning process to happen. Highly recommended also for individual lessons!

Borys Slowikowski is a fantastic teacher. To learn with him is a gratifying experience driven through curiosity; exploring rhythm and the elasticity of time-travel. The emphasis is on strengthening listening and assimilation while we play together.
